About Me

Hi, My name is Tanya Garcia and I am from Texas currently living in Michigan, I am in the Master’s Program for New Media Journalism at Full SailUniversity.

I graduated with my Bachelors in Fine Arts and Education from Michigan State University, I also received my Teaching Certificate to teach art k-12th grade, I studied in many different medias, my first passion was drawing,  which led me to graphic design, I have always loved photography and have taken many different classes in photography at Haslett High School, Lansing Community College, Central Michigan University and Michigan State University.

I also worked for my highschool Yearbook as the junior class editor and photographer for my class. I was in charge of taking pictures, editing, writing, and selling ads, I also took classes in journalism at Central Michigan University, and worked for The Lookout at Lansing Community college alongside my mentor, Raul Garcia.  Currently, I have been working for Valleywood Publications, Donna News, and started LasningNewsWire.com with Raul Garcia.

I am a former Art teacher who has taught photography, graphic design, sculpting, painting, drawing, art history  etc.. I am also a former substitute teacher who has taught in many different schools and various grades, with a diverse group of students. I have taught classes such as art, music, gym, journalism, spanish, german, french, reading, writing math just to name a few. Working at various schools around my area.

I believe all this has led me to where I am today to be a well rounded, diverse, and professional individual.

My goal is to help bring the community together and celebrate the accomplishments of those around us through my reporting.

My beat is high school girls wrestling. I want to write news reports and feature stories about girls wrestling. I have enjoyed attending wrestling competitions and began taking photos of many wrestlers in action last year. I began covering girls wrestling because my daughter joined the wrestling team at an early age. Now she is an All-State Wrestler in the state of Michigan. Some factors that will help me cover girls wrestling is my access to student athletes and coaches. I have meet many wrestlers and coaches over the last two years while attending competition at the high school level.

My audience are my friends, family and followers on my Facebook, TikTok and other  social media platforms. I see the potential for a large audience among the schools and wrestling community between the  ages of  15-55  male and females.

I believe this content is right for new media journalism, because the girls wrestling is also new and growing, we will  grow together. It’s important to document the success for our overall community. Many people are just learning about girls wrestling, and it’s the right time to incorporate New Media Journalism in ways to highlight the sport.
