The Finals: Buurma makes history, Williams claims her crown at the MHSAA Girls State Championship

By TANYA GARCIA

DETROIT — Nobody said climbing the Michigan High School Athletic Association Wrestling Girls Championship mountain was easy. Making it to the top of the mountain is even harder, but a few girls from the Greater Lansing Area were back at Detroit’s Ford Field to grapple for a shot at the State Title.

The best of the best were all there with one goal to win it all over the weekend on February 28, and March 1.

“You have to be able to embrace challenges and you have to be able to accept failure and be able to accept the challenge of the possible outcome. Mentally it’s just locking yourself into a space that says I can do this and I’m going to be challenged, but I’m going to rise to the occasion,” said Michigan Revolution Head Coach Mario Flores, about the mentality and effort it takes to reach the State Championship. “I’m here representing women’s wrestling in Michigan, our Club (Michigan Revolution) and just women’s wrestling as a body.”

Lansing Schools sent Sexton High Senior Ayan Kelley and Eastern High Junior Olivia Delcaruz to the State Championship. Waverly High returned with Senior Victoria Carter, and joining her were teammates Jazlynn Jones, a sophomore, and Se ‘nyah Suddeth-Dos, a freshman. Holt High’s Olivia Root made her return. Perry High Senior Grace Spiess was back. Dewitt High Seniors Jamie Cook and Ryleigh Ruiz made their back-to-back return. Also back in action were Fowlerville’s Margaret and Anna Burma, Cayden Taylor, Hannah Blyvies, Kayley Murphy, Kiely Davis, and Tommi Kleinschmidt. Dansville High Abree Myer was back too.

Mason High Junior Cecillia Williams was on her mission to win it all.

And she did just that, solidifying her name in the annals of Michigan High School Wrestling, grappling her way through the gauntlet of competition to win the state championship in the 125 weight-class by defeating Lola Barkby, the reigning 120-pound champion.

“It was a lot of hard work and practicing even when you don’t feel like it, just keep going,” Williams said about her run for the championship. “She said she was looking forward to wrestling everybody.”

Williams’ chase for the state crown comes after finishing second at State her freshman year and missing her sophomore campaign because of a knee and hip injury.

On her way to the championship match Williams defeated Margaret Young, Madisyn Harrison and Serenity Hayes.

Making history was Fowlerville High Senior Margaret Buurma in the 145 weight-class as she became the first female to win four individual state titles by defeating Belicia Manuel, a junior from Romeo High in front of 24,000 people in attendance at the State Championship over the weekend.

Earning All-State honors from around the Lansing Area were Aubree Mayr, 100-pounds, 3rd Place of Dansville High; Ryleigh Ruiz, 110-pounds, 5th Place of DeWitt High; Cecilia Williams, 125-pounds, 1st Place of Mason High; Jamie Cook, 125-pounds, 3rd Place of DeWitt High; Olivia Root, 125-pounds, 5th Place of Holt High; Hannah Blyveis, 130-pounds, 4th Place of Fowlerville High; Margaret Buurma, 145-pounds, 1st Place of Fowlerville High; Victoria Carter of Waverly, 170-pounds, 6th Place of Waverly High; Mila Dubroja, 235-pounds, 6th Place of Eaton Rapids High; Rylan Johns, 235-pounds, 8th Place of Portland High.

Lansing Eastern High Junior Olivia Delacruz made return to the State tournament for the third time. On Friday Delacruz won her first match against Medow Gomez, a senior carrying a 23-7 record. Delacurz’s next match pitted her against the reigning second place medalist in the 115 weight-class, Gracie Barry with a record 32-1 wrestling for Grand Haven High. Delacruz would go on to lose the match 10-0 and she did not survive the blood rounds respectively as she was defeated by Dezarea Mathis, 30-4, of Hastings High. This year Delacruz finished with a record of 28-8 in the 115-pound weight-class after earning All-State honors last year finishing No. 8 in the 105 weight-class.

“I’m okay, Delacruz said after her match. “I will work hard to make it back to States my senior year.”

Waverly High’s Jazlynn Jones, a sophomore, made her first appearance at States in the 115 weight class. Jones was eliminated after losing her first two matches respectively. Jones finished her season with a record of 24-19. She was defeated by Kennedy Perez, a senior and Dezarea Mathis.

Fowlerville High’s Anna Buurma, a sophomore, finished the day in the 115 weight-class winning her first match against Milayna Shea and was defeated by Ziona Gardner in the second round and Emma Baker in the blood rounds respectively. Burrma ends her season with a 37-11 season record.

Lansing Sexton High’s Senior Ayan Kelley Made her triumphant return to States in the 155 weight-class carrying a 30-8 record heading into States. Kelley was defeated in her two matches of the competition respectively. She faced off against Brooklyn Sage, a senior, who finished No. 7 last year. In Kelley’s second match she was defeated by Paige Wilman.

Waverly High Senior Victoria Carter pushed her way through the winners bracket on Friday. Leading up to her semi-finals match Carter defeated Angel Miller and London Crossley before colliding with Maddie Hayden who defeated her and went on to claim the 170 weight-class crown.

Dewitt High Senior Jaimie Cook made it to the semi-finals where she faced off against Lola Barkby and was unsuccessful. Cook went on to claim the third place medal by defeating Jenna Bradford to reach the match for third place where she ultimately defeated Serenity Hayes. Last year Cook finished No. 2 in the 125 weight-class.

Road to Ford Field

The road to Michigan high school wrestling glory runs through Ford Field, and the state’s best grapplers prepare for the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Championships all season. Among them were the Lansing area regional champions, determined to cement their legacies and bring home the state titles in their respective divisions.

“My goal is to put my name on the board in our school wrestling room with all the other state champions from Eastern,” Delacruz said.

Delacruz is Lansing Eastern’s first female wrestler to advance to the championship round. This weekend marks her third consecutive trip since reaching States as a freshman.

“It felt exciting, I was excited, and nervous entering the regional round, but after my first match it all went away,” Delacruz said about her recent matches. “Qualifying for States was like another win for me. It felt like I earned it knowing girls just had districts the week before for the first time ever in Michigan. I feel great.”

She said going to States for the third time is exciting and it’s going to be a fun trip, and extra special because of the people who come to support her and cheer for her on her quest to bring home the state championship title.

Also returning to States was Ayan Kelley, a Senior at Sexton High wrestling in the 155- division and carrying a 30-6 record. She finished No. 3 at the Division 3 Regional. Joining Kelly in the same division is Fowlerville High’s Tommi Kleinschmidt, a senior with a 10-4 record.

Mason High’s Ceclia Williams is the Region Three No. 1 seed in the 125-division with a 6-0 record. Following her respectively, are Dewitt High’s Jaime Cook, 39-3, who finished No. 2 and Holt High’s Olivia Root, No. 3 with a record of 34-8.

Dewitt High’s Rylieh Ruiz, a senior holding a 35-7 record entering States makes her return as the No. 2 seed from region three. She returned to capitalize on her third place finish last year at Ford Field.

The No. 3 State ranked Lady Gladiators team sent seven members to battle on the mat. Leading the team is three-time defending champion Margaret Buurma, 34-4, 145-pound division. Also appearing for the Lady Gladiators are Cayden Taylor, junior,105-pound, 25-17; Anna Buurma, sophomore, 115-pounds, 35-7; Hannah Blyveis, senior, 130-pound, 36-4; Kaley Murphy, junior, 135-pound, 27-12; Kiely Davis, junior, 115 15-5; Tommi Kleinschmidt, senior, 155-pound, 10-4.
