LANSING – The Don Johnson Field House in Lansing was alive on May 3, as it hosted the WAAAM States 2025, wrestling tournament that brought together some of the most promising young athletes from across Michigan.

Allandale Wrestling Club’s 6-year-old wrestler, Chloe Barker was among the youngest competitors at the event and she was ready to take on the competition coming her way.

Barker finished in third place in the eight and younger 43/46-weight-class.

“I feel good about my first win, Barker said, holding her teddy bear on the mat after defeating James Jacobs with a fall of .55 seconds.

The event began at 9 am, and was a full day of wrestling for both high school and middle school divisions.

A total of 58 teams participated with more than 300 wrestlers testing their skills on the mat.

Among this year’s champions was Lansing Wrestling Club’s Avery Bustos who took home the state championship in the high school division in the 166 weight-class. His teammate Jeilani Ali placed third respectively in the 109 weight-class.

Lansings Red Dog Wrestling team’s Keyshawn Bean (125-pounds) and Jeremiah Diggs (118-pounds) each finished in second place in their divisions respectively. Their teammate  Justin Niyubushobozi won the State Championship in the 131 weight-class. Jadon Dufon finished third in the 141 weight-class. Rodney Addison captured the third place medal respectively in the 125 weight-class. Mekhi Griffin finished second in the 220 weight-class.  Darius Flowers finished third in the 177 weight-class. Ke`Yaun Bradford finished first in the 151 weight-class.

Lansing Waverly Warriors  Isiah Keck took home the first place State Championship medal in the 125 weight-class.  Troy Ellis finished second in the 290 weight-class. Se`Nyah Suddeth-Doss finished second in the girls division.

Athletes competed in various weight classes, with matches held throughout the day. The competition was fierce highlighting the depth of talent present. Coaches and spectators filled the stands, offering support and encouragement to the young competitors.

“Placing third at the WAAAM tournament is one of my proudest moments in life,” said Jaylin Potter, a ninth grader with Premier Wrestling. “My first match was a difficult one. My opponent was ranked 5th in the state. My stomach was in knots and I was super nervous, but the excitement was amazing! I just knew I was there to try my hardest to win.”
