MERCEDES, TEXAS – The Sons of the American Legion Post 172 recently hosted a barbecue chicken plate fundraiser to help support the post’s ongoing efforts in aiding veterans, funding its annual scholarship program, and sponsoring students for Boys State, a prestigious government and leadership program for high school juniors.
Legionnaires, American Legion Riders, Sons of the American Legion and Auxiliary members came together in full force, firing up the grills and preparing meals for hundreds of community members who drove up to the post to show their support. Volunteers helped cook, serve, and deliver plates in a true display of teamwork and dedication to service.
“This kind of event really shows the heart of our post,” said Aurelio Garcia, Sons of the American Legion Post 172 Commander. “We’re not just raising funds—we’re building community and making sure our youth and our veterans are taken care of.”
In addition to the planned fundraiser, the post also organized a second chicken plate event to support Post member Leo Villarreal and his family following the passing of his daughter Rebecca Villarreal-Salinas.
“I would like to send out a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart to all that helped cook, serve and sponsor the meal for us in this time of need,” said Leo Villarreal.
The plates were offered to family, friends, and members of the community who attended funeral services earlier this week for Rebecca, helping provide comfort and meals during a time of mourning.
“Our hearts go out to the Villarreal family,” said Aurelio Garcia, Sons of American Legion Post 172 Commander. “We hope that in some small way, these meals show our love and support.”
The back-to-back fundraisers not only demonstrated the post’s commitment to service but also highlighted the strong bonds within the Mercedes community.
Garcia said the donations raised will continue to fund vital programs and help families in need, staying true to the American Legion’s mission of service, patriotism, and compassion.
